The weather lately has been hotter than ever before. Today, the heat index reached about 106 degrees, which can cause some individuals – especially the elderly and the young – to have serious reactions to the heat. Besides staying inside until it’s cooler outside and wearing sunscreen, one of the most important things to do to survive hot weather is to stay hydrated.
Although most fruits and vegetables provide some hydration, a lot of people don’t eat enough for it to make a difference. And only drinking juices, sodas or coffee is not going to do it either even though it does contribute to the overall liquid intake. A word of caution: beverages like caffeinated coffee, teas and soda can actually make one feel even more dehydrated. The best fluid to intake is good old fashioned water.
For me, water is my drink of choice (although I do indulge quite often with coffee) and when we have bottled water I drink about six bottles per day. It’s really the only thing that quenches my thirst….
