The weather lately has been hotter than ever before. Today, the heat index reached about 106 degrees, which can cause some individuals – especially the elderly and the young – to have serious reactions to the heat. Besides staying inside until it’s cooler outside and wearing sunscreen, one of the most important things to do to survive hot weather is to stay hydrated.
Although most fruits and vegetables provide some hydration, a lot of people don’t eat enough for it to make a difference. And only drinking juices, sodas or coffee is not going to do it either even though it does contribute to the overall liquid intake. A word of caution: beverages like caffeinated coffee, teas and soda can actually make one feel even more dehydrated. The best fluid to intake is good old fashioned water.

When I was a young girl my grandmother taught me how to sew and when I got older I bought my own sewing machine to work on little projects. The joy of creating a garment from scratch has faded over the years, but I’m happy that it’s come back somewhat in the form of clothing alterations and creations as well as jewelry making. The other day I was visiting a woman’s blog and she had a post up for Wordless Wednesday that was simply titled: “One day…” The picture was of a woman wearing a beautiful white wedding gown. The other day I had to run out of the house to get some errands done. On the list of things to do:
Get gas.
Mail packages.
Pick up a few things from the store.
Pay a bill.
I was already in an icky mood and to make matters worse as I was walking into the gas station to pay for my gas my left foot shifted slightly and rolled to the side. I recovered quickly, but something wasn’t right. I kind of limped along for a second then glanced down and saw that my.shoe.was.broken! I’d only had those cute blue thong wedges for a couple of months so I was extremely displeased. to top it off there were my “go to” cute shoe for the summer.
To say that my face got red and steam streamed from my ears is probably an understatement. It just seemed like a “broke the camel’s back” moment. Luckily, I wasn’t far from home and I sped back – after walking with as much dignity as I could and pumping my gas – stormed into the house and put on a regular pair of flip flops.
